We collect as little as the site, its games and modules need to work, we never sell it, and we explain plainly what each piece is for.

Who we are
81Matrix (www.81matrix.com) is responsible for the personal data collected through this website and any game or learning module available on it. We are the "controller" under the EU and UK GDPR and the "data fiduciary" under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023.
This policy is written to meet the EU and UK GDPR, India's DPDP Act 2023 and IT (Reasonable Security Practices) Rules 2011, the California CCPA as amended by the CPRA, Canada's PIPEDA, Australia's Privacy Act 1988 and Brazil's LGPD. Where these laws differ, we apply the more protective standard to everyone.
What we collect
Information you give us:
- Contact form — your name, email address, subject and message.
- Download requests — your name, email address, intended use, any note you add, and the item you asked for.
Information collected automatically:
- Aggregate page statistics, with the last part of your IP address removed before anything is stored.
- Standard server logs kept by our hosting provider for security (IP address, browser type, page requested, date and time).
What we never collect: visitor accounts or passwords, payment details, precise location, government ID numbers, health, religious or other sensitive categories of data, or advertising identifiers.
Inside games and modules
Any game or module available on this website runs entirely in your browser. Your progress, points, discovered items and preferences (sound, narration voice, language and speaking speed) are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device. They are never sent to us, and we cannot see them. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.
Spoken narration uses the text-to-speech voices built into your device. The words are spoken by your browser or operating system; no audio is recorded or sent to us.
Games and modules do not use your microphone, camera, location or contacts. They contain no advertising, in-game purchases, chat, social sharing or public leaderboards, and they do not ask players for a name or email address.
Game passcodes
Games and modules that require a passcode open only with one issued by 81Matrix. When you enter one, we check it against our list, add one to its use count, and set a secure cookie that holds the code and its expiry time. The cookie is signed so it cannot be altered, cannot be read by page scripts, and lasts 24 hours or until the code expires, whichever is sooner.
Our passcode records hold only the code, its creation date, expiry date, use limit and use count. They are not linked to your name or device. If we sent a code to you by email, that email is kept like any other correspondence (see Retention).
Why we use it and our legal basis
- To send the material you requested and tell you if a source note on it is corrected — to take steps you asked for (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) and your consent (DPDP s.6).
- To reply to your message — the same bases.
- To run the passcode gate and keep the site secure — our legitimate interest in protecting the site and its content (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)), and legitimate uses under DPDP s.7.
- To understand, in aggregate, which pages are useful — legitimate interest, using data that cannot identify you.
- To meet a legal obligation, such as a lawful request from an authority (GDPR Art. 6(1)(c)).
We do not use your data for profiling, advertising, or automated decisions that affect you, and requesting a download does not sign you up for anything else.
Cookies and browser storage
We use only what a feature you choose needs:
- m81_lang — remembers your language choice. Functional. Kept for 1 year.
- m81_game — confirms a valid game passcode. Strictly necessary. Kept up to 24 hours.
- Game and module keys in local storage (for example vmq.*) — game progress and preferences. Stay on your device until you clear them.
- wordpress_* — set only for site administrators who log in. Visitors never receive them.
There are no advertising, profiling, social-media or cross-site cookies. Because everything above is strictly necessary or set only when you use the feature, no consent banner is required under the ePrivacy Directive or UK PECR. You can block or delete these in your browser settings, but language choice and the games will then not work.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We do not track visitors across websites, so Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals are effectively honoured for everyone by default.
Who else handles your data
We do not sell, rent or trade personal data, and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioural advertising as defined by the CCPA. The only service providers involved are:
- Our hosting provider, which stores the website, delivers form emails and keeps server logs, acting only on our instructions.
- Google Fonts, which supplies the typefaces used by the site, its games and modules. Like any web request, your browser sends Google your IP address and browser details when the fonts load. Google says it does not use this to build profiles or target ads.
We disclose data to authorities only when the law requires it, and we tell you about such a request where we are allowed to.
International transfers
Our hosting provider and Google may process data in countries other than yours, including India, the European Union and the United States. Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, these transfers rely on an adequacy decision or on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses (with the UK Addendum). Transfers out of India follow the DPDP Act and any restrictions notified under it.
How long we keep it
- Download requests — 2 years, so we can send corrections.
- Contact messages — 3 years, so we can keep correspondence going.
- Passcode records — until the code is revoked or expires, then 12 months.
- Game access cookie — 24 hours at most.
- Server logs — according to our host's schedule, usually 90 days or less.
- Game progress in your browser — until you clear it.
You can ask us to delete your data sooner, and we will.
How we protect it
The whole site runs over HTTPS. Game cookies are signed, HttpOnly and SameSite. The game files cannot be opened directly, and only named administrators can reach the data we hold. These measures follow the reasonable security practices required by India's IT Rules 2011 and GDPR Art. 32.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach is likely to put your rights at risk, we will tell you without undue delay and notify the relevant authority within the time the law sets — 72 hours under the GDPR, and as the Data Protection Board of India requires under the DPDP Act.
Children
Games and modules are made for learners of all ages, including children, and they collect no personal data, so children can play without giving us any.
Our contact and download forms are for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 (US COPPA), under 16 in the EU (or the lower age a member state sets), or under 18 in India without verifiable parental consent. A parent, guardian or teacher should ask for passcodes or materials on a child's behalf.
If you think a child has sent us personal data, write to us and we will delete it promptly.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the data we hold about you, in a portable format;
- correct anything inaccurate or incomplete;
- erase your data;
- restrict or object to how we use it;
- withdraw consent at any time — this does not affect anything done before you withdrew it;
- tell you who it has been disclosed to.
Under the DPDP Act you can also nominate someone to act for you if you die or become incapacitated. Californian residents have the rights to know, delete, correct and opt out of sale or sharing (we do neither), and will not be treated differently for using them.
Email solutions@81matrix.com. We will confirm your identity by replying to the email address on record, and respond free of charge within 30 days. Where the law allows longer for complex requests (45 days under the CCPA), we will tell you before the deadline.
Complaints
Please contact us first at solutions@81matrix.com with the subject "Privacy" — that address is also our grievance contact under the DPDP Act and the IT Rules, and we acknowledge every complaint within 72 hours.
Links to other sites
Lessons and reading lists link to publishers, libraries and other outside sites. Their own privacy policies apply once you leave 81Matrix, and we are not responsible for how they handle data.
Changes to this policy
Each change is dated at the top of this page. If we make a material change — for example, a new kind of data, a new service provider, or a new feature in a game or module — we will announce it here before it takes effect. Earlier versions are available on request.
